Nagihan Yılmaz Sezgin, Turkish Traditional & Modern Design Artist

I'm Nagihan YILMAZ SEZGİN, art has been my way of life since my childhood, so I pursued my education in this field. In 1987, I graduated from the Department of Industrial Product Design and Painting in the Faculty of Vocational Education at Gazi University. I worked as an art teacher at a girls' vocational and technical high school for 35 years.

With the education I received, I acquired artwork in various techniques, but my introduction to the technique I enjoyed the most occurred in 1984-1985 with the book "Turkish Fine Marquetry Art KAAT'I," written by Ord. Prof. A.Süheyl ÜNVER and his daughter Gülbün MASARA. During my years as a teacher, I established an Art Club at my school and worked with high school students on Kaat'I technique paintings. We held numerous successful group exhibitions.

After various experimental studies, I began working on my own designs and compositions, abstracting flowers and birds in the style of illumination (tezhip). As I advanced in this technique, I combined modern designs in the style of miniature with the Ebru technique.

After retiring from teaching and moving to Eskişehir, I participated in various group exhibitions organized by the Eskişehir Art Association. On August 1, 2023, I held a personal exhibition in Eskişehir in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Republic ("Treasures from the Past, Timeless Art of Kaat'ı" Location: Atilla ÖZER Caricatured House exhibition hall). "I was honored with the award at the 8th of March International Women's Day Exhibition, held on 06.03.2024, for keeping alive the rare art of Kaat-I in the present day."

The Woman Artist of the Year Award was given to the Kaat'ı Artist Nagihan Yılmaz Sezgin

Since its establishment in 2002, the Eskişehir Art Association has been celebrating International Women's Day on March 8th each year with large-scale exhibitions, and in this exhibition, the Woman Artist of the Year Award is presented to an artist annually. This award has been given to a painter, a poet, or a Kutahya stone artist in different years. This year, the award was given to a female artist who continues the tradition of Kaat-I Art in Eskişehir, one of our forgotten traditional arts. This artist is Nagihan Yılmaz Sezgin...

Kaat-I art is an Ottoman art form. Kaat-I literally means cutting. It is also called cutting and carving art on paper or leather. It is also known as paper carving art because it is mainly applied as a very fine work on paper. It is an art form created by carving beautiful writings and motifs with a sharp curved knife called "Revregen" onto another paper to create a colored background. Examples of this art have been known since the 14th century, and its oldest and most important work is housed in the Topkapı Palace Collection. It is even mentioned as the most important art form during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. In addition to writings, decorations such as flowers, flowers in vases, trees, natural scenes, and birds have been widely used in this art. Over time, stylized abstractions have also been made. This art has become widespread from China to Romanian artists today, and it has even found application in decorative purposes in sizes of 2-3 meters.

Our great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk wanted the Department of these arts to be opened at the Academy of Fine Arts and for contemporary artists to develop and be included in our lives. Although efforts were made, no results were achieved because it did not receive attention from students. While everyone was painting oil or watercolor paintings, Nagihan Yılmaz Sezgin, a member of the Eskişehir Art Association, chose this delicate and difficult art, creates works, opens personal exhibitions, and exhibits her works in the association's group exhibitions. Nagihan Yılmaz Sezgin, born in 1964 in Gemlik, Bursa, is a graduate of Ankara Gazi University Faculty of Education, Department of Painting Teaching. She retired after 35 years of teaching painting, is an expert in Turkish-Islamic Arts, and started her journey after encountering the book of GülbünMesara, daughter of the famous artist Süheyl Ünver. She improved herself through her research. The Woman Artist of the Year Award was presented to Nagihan Yılmaz Sezgin by the Mayor of Odunpazarı, Kazım Kurt, and Mayor Kurt said in his speech, "We should protect and develop these traditional arts; they are our arts."
